Conditions For A Free NHS Eye Test:
Age
- You are Under 16
- You are Under 19 years of age and in full time education
- You are aged 60 or over
Health
- You are registered blind or partially sighted
- You are diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
- You are over 40 and a parent, brother, sister or child of someone with glaucoma
- You have been advised by a hospital ophthalmologist that you are at risk of glaucoma
- You are prescribed a complex lens
Income
- You or your partner receive Income Support or Income Based Job Seekers Allowance
- You or your partner receive Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- You or your partner receive a Tax Credit and are named on a valid Tax Credit NHS Exemption Certificate
- You or your partner receive Pension Credit - Guaranteed Credit
- You have a low income and are named on a valid NHS HC2 certificate for full help with health cost. If you are named on a valid NHS HC3 certificate for partial help with health costs, you may get some help with eyecare, see certificate for details
- You are a prisoner being seen outside prison

Age
- You are Under 16
- You are Under 19 years of age and in full time education
Income
- You or your partner receive Income Support or Income Based Job Seekers Allowance
- You or your partner receive Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- You or your partner receive a Tax Credit and are named on a valid Tax Credit NHS Exemption Certificate
- You or your partner receive Pension Credit - Guaranteed Credit

Glasses are free with a NHS optical voucher issued following the eye test. Free glasses are from a specific range, all other ranges, including designer glasses are discounted with the NHS optical voucher. If possible please bring your proof of entitlement when you come for your eye test as you will be asked to provide it
Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS)?
What is a Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS)?
This is a FREE NHS funded service available to patients with a registered GP in Walsall, Wolverhampton or Sandwell & West Birmingham CCG area’s.
Check on www.eyecarewm.co.uk for GP areas.
Conditions that can be seen under the service include:
- Red eye or eyelids
- Dry eye, or gritty and uncomfortable eyes
- Irritation and inflammation of the eye
- Significant recent sticky discharge from the eye or watery eye
- Recently occurring flashes or floaters
- Ingrowing eyelashes
- Recent and sudden loss of vision
- Foreign body in the eye
The Minor Eye Condition Services are available at Focus Eye Clinic Walsall, Wolverhampton & Nechells branches as well as other local opticians.
